2 Feb 2017
Every 2 February, the world celebrates World Wetlands Day in commemoration of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on the same date in 1971 in the Iranian City of Ramsar. This year’s theme “Wetlands for Disaster Risk Reduction” is selected to raise public awareness about the vital role of healthy wetlands in reducing the impacts of extreme events and natural hazards such as floods, droughts and cyclones on communities, and in helping to build resilience.
As a Ramsar Regional Initiative, the Ramsar Regional Center – East Asia (RRC-EA) invites stakeholders of wetlands to join the celebrations for this important event. The RRC-EA, through its Wetland Fund, has provided financial assistance to government organizations in Cambodia, the Philippines, and Viet Nam for three (3) projects in support of locally organized World Wetlands Day-related events.
