1st Meeting of the International Steering Committee of the Asian Wetland Symposium 2017
The 1st Meeting of the International Steering Committee (ISC) of the Asian Wetland Symposium (AWS) 2017 was held on 25-26 February 2017 in Suncheon City, Republic of Korea. The Ramsar Regional Center – East Asia (RRC-EA) hosted the event with support from the Ministry of Environment and the Suncheon City Government, and in cooperation with the Ramsar Center Japan (RCJ), Japan Wetland Society (JWS), and Wetlands International – Japan (WIJ). The RCJ, JWS and WIJ facilitated the meeting and synthesized insights from the participants for input to the symposium design. The meeting discussed about the proposed structure of the symposium to include keynote presentations, technical sessions, general and theme-based poster presentations, and field visits.
The 6th Conference of Wetland Link International (WLI) – Asia will be integrated in the AWS program and will be spearheaded by the RRC-EA as the Secretariat of WLI-Asia. The conference is expected to provide managers of wetland education centers with the opportunity to learn from the various sessions of the AWS, and also share their experiences and build networks with other managers and wetland experts in Asia.
The meeting culminated with a field visit to Suncheon Bay. Key officers of the RCJ, JWS, WIJ and RRC-EA paid a courtesy call on the Mayor of Suncheon City, Mr. Cho Chung-Hun, and invited him to join a round table discussion at the AWS with the mayors of Arao City, Kashima City and Saga City in Japan.
The ISC is comprised of eminent wetland scientists, academicians, and practitioners from selected Asian countries, the United Kingdom, and the Ramsar Convention Secretariat. The 8th Asian Wetland Symposium is slated on 7-11 November 2017 in Saga, Japan (aws2017.org).
